In 1888, with a scant $800 in capital, James Sterchi and his brothers J.C. and E.H. formed the Sterchi Brothers Furniture Company in Knoxville. Turns out it was a pretty good investment of $800…by 1929 Sterchi’s was reputed to be the largest furniture chain in the world boasting 48 stores, 5 manufacturing plants and a sizeable portion of Kentucky forest land that supplied it’s ever growing operations. During this boom in business, in the middle of the excesses of the roaring 1920’s, the company constructed a corporate headquarters worthy of such an immense and profitable venture on the 100 block of Gay St.
Over 80 years later that building now houses one of the best values in downtown Knoxville living.
Renovated in 2002 by Leigh Burch III and John Gumpert, the Sterchi’s building contains modern, upscale loft apartments ranging from studio suites to four bedroom units. Amenities such as high end appliances, Corian countertops, upgraded cabinetry, porcelain tubs and pedestal sinks compliment design notes such as sliding steel interior doors, stained concrete floors, exposed spiral ducts and enormous windows in each unit, offering an unequivocal living experience. Additionally, building amenities such as laundry and fitness facilities, dedicated parking and high end security offer residents convenience as well as piece of mind.
